Venomous and vengeful politics

By: Asem Mustafa

The real faces of the politicians are coming afore. Threats added with violence is on the scene that has now engulfed the national politics which leaves a lot to be desired from the political stalwarts who have now assumed the role of bullies.

Politics in Pakistan is rock bottom and man on the street if referred to as politician, in his day to day affairs, find it very offending if called as such. The politicians at the national front made no good examples either switching sides multiple of times and always riding the boat that set sails for infinite plundering without any accountability.

How it all started is like a visit down the memory lane and many of the current lot now in politics was not even born at that time. President Ayub taking on Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s sister Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah is all written in history followed by General Ayub Khan and General Yahya Khan and afterwards Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Gen Zia-ul-Haq. These individuals form part and parcel of the political history of Pakistan and have done things which are still hotly debated. All these political stalwarts have gone six feet under the ground but their legacies are still very much present and active in the national front.

The enmity between Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif is not a secret. The two, when in power rub the other’s nose in dirt to the heart’s content. The incumbent Prime Minister Imran Khan has also faced the backlash in the form of Sita White issue.

This side of political elites at the helm of affairs offers plenty of gossip at the tea stalls and kiosks and after a heated discussion from different supporters, the sanity finally prevails as none of these leaders place bread on the tables of daggers drawn political workers.

How many workers have died in political rallies from gunshots, how many of them have been crushed under the tyrannical tyres of the big wigs  four wheel drives has a count which is never made public.

The time tested politicians namely from Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz and Pakistan People’s Party and other parties including clergy were all shown the exit when Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf was given the reigns of ruling the country.

The month of March 2021 has many a things in its fold firstly the month meant the marching orders for the sitting government during the Senate polls which was thwarted with a vote of confidence from the Prime Minister Imran Khan. The heat from the Senate polls took political bickering, back biting, bribing to a boiling point and what is envisioned is clash of the workers which is bound to result in loss of human lives.

It is with great remorse the workers who sacrifice their lives idolizing their leadership have their efforts thrown in the bin with opposing side’s statement that these political workers were hired thugs. They were called in for damaging the nation’s image and government property. This is the politics in Pakistan.
