NGO asks airlines to stop serving sugary drinks to passengers

ISLAMABAD: Terming sugary drinks a threat to public health and the economy, Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) wrote a letter to multiple airlines to stop serving sugary drinks to passengers on board.

NCDs especially obesity and diabetes are increasing at an alarming rate in Pakistan. Pakistan has the third highest burden of diabetes worldwide with 33 million people living with diabetes and the rate at which diabetes is increasing Pakistan is the world’s number 1 diabetes developing country.

Airlines are often serving sugary drinks to their passengers during the flight which poses a health risk to the passengers. PANAH has written letters to the heads of all airlines in Pakistan asking them not to serve sugary drinks to their passengers during flights and instead provide them with water and other healthy foods.
