Punjab Parliamentarians discuss inclusion of Life Skills education in the curriculum

LAHORE, 11 December 2018, A Consultative Session on Life Skills Based Education with Parliamentarians was organized by the Youth Advocacy Network  (YAN) Pakistan – An organisation working on advocacy. Members of the Punjab Assembly from PTI, PPP and PMLN as well as representatives of different Government departments, PTCB and CSOs participated in the. Session also covered the essence of Human Rights day and 16 Days of Activism. Core focus of the session was to engage and sensitize parliamentarians on Life Skills Based Education, keeping in view the recent National Population Symposium by Honorable Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr Justice Mian Saqib Nisar.

Mr. Danish Tariq Malik, National Coordinator Volunteer YAN and Ms Hamyl Anjum  shared the achievement and progress of youth advocacy network  in the domain of Life skills based Education and shed  light upon the importance and the need of LSBE in status co.

Advocate Amir Bilal, Programs coordinator of YAN , briefed the participants on Life Skill based Education and its importance to the decision makers and students. The session held a detailed review of the addition of LSBE related content in textbooks and suggested study books of school and higher education levels.

Ms. Bushra Anjum Butt (PMLN) highlighted the work of Parliamentary Committee on Education, MPA Aysha Iqbal (PTI) supported the ideaand ensured her full support to integrate LSBE into curricula, MPA Shazia Abid(PPP) also promised to highlight the curriculum related gaps in the assembly.Deputy Managing Director Punjab curriculum and text book board Mr Kamran Hussain emphasized on the coordination of among related Gov. departments.

Overall everyone was agreed that LSBE should be the part of formal curriculum as it is important for the young generation. They discussed about the problems and opportunities for the topic. Miss Shazia Abid MPA PPP also added that “Weshould not wait to let the cases happen with our children to raise voice against it we should stand up for whatever that is happening wrong in our society and LSBE should be integrated into curriculum.”.

In a reply to one of the parliamentarians, Mr. Fsahat-Ul-Hassan, Chairman, Youth Advocacy Network, said “we are not asking to add all the LSBE as separate book in to the curriculum but we are seeking to integrate chapters of LSBE into formal curriculum.”
