PESHAWAR: Youth Council Pakistan (YCP) and Culture Society, Department of Political Science, University of Peshawar, collaborated to host a webinar on “Culture Diversity: Impacts on National Politics of Pakistan”. The virtual event attracted an audience of almost 100 young university students from all over Pakistan, who engaged in an insightful and thought-provoking discussion on the subject.
The Campus Heads of YCP from the University of Peshawar, Muhammad Amin and Vaseya Azam, hosted the webinar, which featured a keynote speech by Mr. Shehzad Ali, a respected lecturer at Government College Swabi and visiting faculty member at the University of Peshawar. The event focused on exploring the complex relationship between culture diversity and politics in Pakistan, and how the country’s various cultural groups have influenced political decisions over time.
During the webinar, Mr. Ali delved into the critical aspects of cultural diversity, highlighting the need for a nuanced and sensitive approach towards promoting cultural diversity in Pakistan. He spoke about the concept of Critical Multiculturalism, emphasising the importance of public reasoning and alternative epistemological tools as a means to achieve this ideal. Mr. Ali also discussed the problems that hinder cultural diversity, including trends towards homogenization and uniformity, and cultural-based reactionary. Mr. Ali suggested that public reasoning with indigenous spirit is the way to positively incorporate cultural diversity in politics.
The webinar also featured a lively panel discussion, which explored the role of cultural identity in political mobilisation, the impact of cultural diversity on policy making, and the challenges of promoting diversity in politics. Ayub Jaan, Associate Professor at the University of Peshawar, joined the discussion, providing valuable insights and perspectives on the topic. The hour-long question and answer session that followed allowed participants to engage in a stimulating debate and express their opinions on the topic. The attendees, who were predominantly political science students from various universities across Pakistan, expressed their appreciation for the event, which they found to be informative and thought-provoking
