Youth Parliament Debates Climate, Extremism & Disillusionment in Final Session

ISLAMABAD: With passion and a deep sense of responsibility, young voices from across Pakistan came together in Islamabad for the final session of the 18th Youth Parliament Pakistan (YPP), making it clear that the future of the country belongs to them and they’re ready to shape it.

The day began with a thought-provoking session connecting two of Pakistan’s biggest challenges: climate change and extremism. Former Federal Minister for Climate Change, Malik Amin Aslam Khan, explained how environmental stresses like water scarcity are not just ecological issues, but powerful drivers of conflict, even contributing to ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. Joining him on the panel, MNA Sabheen Ghoury highlighted the importance of inclusive policymaking. He noted that young people must be part of the national dialogue on such critical cross-cutting issues.

During an engaging Q&A, youth participants voiced concerns over climate-induced displacement, food insecurity, and reparations. Both panelists acknowledged the role of global cooperation but emphasized that strong, homegrown solutions must come first.

Later, former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi delivered a heartfelt keynote on how young people can overcome political disillusionment and resist radicalization. Describing youth as Pakistan’s “greatest untapped asset,” he drew parallels with China’s development success and pointed to the Constitution as the vital link between citizens and the state. He warned, however, that without quality education, political accountability, and protection of rights, this bond is at risk. “Youth don’t need a savior,” he said. “They need a system that works.”

His remarks sparked an honest and emotional exchange with the young parliamentarians, who questioned the relevance of the Constitution and how it could be a real tool for change. Mr. Abbasi called for deep reforms, trust-building, and meaningful opportunities for youth participation in democratic processes.

This impactful session was part of a broader initiative to counter and prevent terrorism in Pakistan. The project is funded by the European Union, led by NACTA, and implemented by UNODC in partnership with civil society organization PILDAT. Together, they aim to build community resilience and empower young leaders to push back against the forces of radicalization with ideas, dialogue, and action.
